At Arts of Past, we are passionate about sharing the beauty, strength, and cultural richness of Polynesian culture. Rooted in tradition and driven by community, our studio offers a space where students of all ages can connect, grow, and express themselves through movement and music.

Founded and led by husband-and-wife team Jessy and Sefa Pumphrey, Arts of Past brings together decades of experience, cultural knowledge, and a deep love for the art forms they teach. Together, they are committed to inspiring the next generation while honoring the traditions that came before them.

Jessy Pumphrey

Jessy Pumphrey is an award-winning Polynesian dancer, choreographer, and instructor. Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, she began her Polynesian dance journey in 2002 under Paty Chavez and has since trained with renowned artists including Nonosina, Moeata Laughlin, Moena Maiotui, Makau Foster, and Tiare Trompette.

With over 23 years of experience, Jessy has performed and taught internationally, offering workshops across Mexico, Canada, South America, and the United States. She has earned numerous ‘Ori Tahiti awards and 12 Overall titles, including the prestigious Vahine Overall ‘Arioi Champion title in Papeete, Tahiti.

Today, Jessy serves as Co-Director of Hitira’a Tahi alongside her husband, Sefa, where she continues to inspire dancers worldwide through in-person training and online programs.

Sefa Pumphrey

Sefa Pumphrey is a Polynesian drumming artist, instructor, performer, and custom drum builder. With over 30 years of experience, he has earned numerous awards in both group and drumming competitions and has performed internationally in countries around the world.

He trained under Tahiti-born Master Drummer Tuko Mapuhi Tekurio, developing a deep understanding of traditional rhythms and their cultural significance. Today, Sefa teaches regular drumming classes, leads workshops worldwide, and creates original drum compositions for dance competitions, groups, and creative projects both in person and online.
